Stichting Maendeleo - Port Reitz Special School (Mombasa, Kenya)

Objective

To further develop the existing school garden (shamba) at Port Reitz Special School into a sustainable and practical learning environment for children and young people with disabilities. The school provides education, care and, where necessary, accommodation to approximately 250 students.

Approach

The school garden enables students to learn by doing. Depending on their abilities, they take part in activities such as sowing, planting, watering, composting and harvesting. Through these activities, they develop practical skills as well as teamwork, planning, responsibility and care for their environment. The vegetables grown in the garden also provide a valuable addition to the school’s daily meals.

JIP’s contribution to the project

JIP Foundation supports the further development of the existing school garden, including garden tools and materials, seeds and plants, irrigation and educational materials. The contribution also helps provide continued guidance by the school’s gardener, enabling the garden to become an integral and sustainable part of the students’ practical education.
